Designing Local Games for Learning |
Mark Wagler, Kurt Squire, Jim Mathews, Mingfong Jan, John Martin, Chris Holden In this interactive workshop, our team will teach the principles and processes behind designing local games for learning. We draw from a variety of games that we have developed and tested in classrooms, including Hip Hop Tycoon, South Shore Beach, Mad City Mystery, Dow Day, and The Greenbush Game. In this session, participants will see the process behind designing these games — which can be applied to other areas of game design. Using the game editor developed by Eric Klopfer and colleagues at MIT, participants will produce a quick prototype of a game centered around Madison, Wisconsin. How to integrate such games into curricula and research findings emerging from these studies will be discussed. |
