BIOGRAPHY Deborah A. Fields is a doctoral student at the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. Prior to attending UCLA, she obtained a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. During that time she became an avid videogame player through James Paul Gee’s first video games and learning course. Influenced by her gaming experiences, her research interests cover studying youth’s identities and informal learning and teaching practices across spaces — including virtual, school, home, and informal spaces such as clubs and religious communities. She is also interested in how digital media can be designed and used to promote diversified and shared expertise amongst youth. All of these interests find a home in her recent work on Whyville where, in addition to studying cheat sites, avatars, and learning, she is an established, wealthy citizen and is saving for an exclusive car.
